Grading the paving away from the wall keeps rain and hose water off a Van Nuys foundation. A gentle fall of around 2 percent carries that water to a drain or to planted ground. A deck needs the same thinking from the other direction, with flashing at the house wall and gaps that let water drop through.

Patios that fall away

The slope is set with string lines and a level before the base is compacted, because concrete and pavers can only be as true as the layer under them. Downspouts that used to empty beside the wall are piped to a safe outlet, and a slot drain is added where a door threshold sits close to the paving. A paver patio can also be laid over a gravel base that lets part of the rain soak away. Whatever the surface, the lowest edge needs somewhere to go, and we mark that outlet before the first shovel.

Decks that dry out

At the house wall, flashing is lapped over the top of the ledger and behind the siding so water cannot run down into the rim joist. Self-adhering tape covers the tops of the joists, where screws and rain meet. Posts stand on bases that keep their ends off wet concrete, and the ground under the deck is graded so water runs off and does not pond. Wood that dries between rains lasts. Wood that stays damp at a connection starts to soften, usually where nobody can see it.
