A roof truss with a web cut away to clear a duct or an attic hatch can sit above a Sun Valley ceiling for a long time with nobody aware of it. A fire repair can bring it to light, because charred drywall and wet insulation come down. That one cut means the truss no longer carries load the way it was designed to, so the engineer or the truss maker issues a repair detail, and we price it in writing first.

How a truss carries the roof

Each truss is a set of members working as one, with the top and bottom chords held apart by webs and joined by metal plates. Cut a single web, or bore through a chord, and the load that piece carried has nowhere to go, so the roof can sag and the ceiling below can crack. Heat can also loosen the metal plates where their teeth grip the wood. The repair is usually plywood gussets or added lumber fastened to a pattern the engineer draws, and sometimes a full replacement truss slid into place.

Pricing the change and the LADBS revision

A discovery like this gets its own written change, with photographs of the cut, the engineer's or manufacturer's detail and the added price, and work on that part of the roof waits for your approval. Other parts of the house can keep moving. If the repair alters the approved plans, the detail goes to LADBS as a revision to the Sun Valley permit. The inspector looks at the reinforced truss before insulation and drywall go back, and the change sits on the scope as a line of its own.
