Somewhere in the attic of a North Hollywood house, a roof truss may be missing a piece: a web cut out to fit a duct, a furnace or an attic ladder. Fire cleanup that strips the ceiling is often when that comes to light. A truss works only as a complete set of triangles, so a missing piece can leave the roof carrying weight on a frame never designed for it. That discovery moves the trusses to the front of the repair.

What an altered truss looks like

Signs of a cut truss are easy to miss in a dark attic. A web may be gone entirely, notched to let a duct pass, or replaced with a scrap board nailed at each end. A bottom chord may be cut through where an attic ladder was set in. Above a cut truss the roof can show a slight dip, and the ceiling under it may crack along the same line. After a fire, char along any member is traced too, since one weakened piece affects the whole truss. Every truss in the area is photographed and numbered.

Repair design and the LADBS revision

Truss repairs follow a written design from an engineer or the company that made the trusses, usually new lumber or plywood gussets fastened across the damage, or a new truss set alongside the old one. If the duct or ladder that caused the cut is staying, it is rerouted or reframed so the repaired truss stays whole. The design goes to LADBS, as a revision when a permit is already open, and the inspector sees the repair before the new ceiling covers it.
