The electrical panel that served a burned Sun Valley house may be gone along with its walls, leaving a meter pedestal or a temporary pole. Where the new main panel will stand matters to a backyard unit, because the unit's feeder starts there and runs underground to a subpanel inside it. A long feeder needs heavier wire and a longer trench, so we fix the panel location first and keep the unit within a sensible run of it.

Sizing the service and routing the feeder

A main panel serving a house and a backyard unit has to carry both, so the service is sized from a load calculation that counts the unit's cooktop, water heater, heat pump and any car charger. If the old service is being replaced after the fire, this is the moment to size the new one for both buildings. The feeder runs in conduit buried at the depth the electrical code sets, and it keeps clear of the sewer and gas routes. Where its trench would cross the future house site, it follows the edge of the lot.

LADBS inspections and the utility's say

LADBS permits the unit and inspects its wiring in stages: the trench with conduit in place before any soil goes back, the rough wiring while studs are bare, and the panels, breakers and devices at final. Smoke alarms are hardwired and interconnected during the rough stage. If the service is being replaced or the meter moved, the utility's planners decide where the new equipment may stand and how much clear space it needs in front, so we meet with them before the unit's footprint is locked. Their answer can move the unit a few feet.
