Color that sits inside the plaster has no paint film to peel, so we tint the finish coat on a new Temple City house. Cement plaster goes on in scratch, brown and finish coats over paper and metal lath. Hard sun can bleach a painted wall and dry heat can lift paint at its edges. A tinted coat weathers evenly, the plaster itself does not burn, and the paper behind it carries off rain a hard storm pushes through a crack.
The layers, from frame to finish
Over the sheathing go 2 layers of grade D building paper, then galvanized lath fastened into the studs. The scratch coat is raked so the brown coat can grip it, and the brown coat is kept damp while it cures, since plaster that dries too quickly tends to crack. A weep screed at the base of each wall lets water behind the plaster drain out above the soil. Control joints break up long runs so any movement shows as a straight line in a place we chose. The finish coat goes on last, its pigment measured by the bag so each batch matches the one before.
Openings, inspection and upkeep
Windows and doors are flashed into the paper layers before any lath goes up, lapped so water always runs outward. The city building inspector checks the paper and lath ahead of any plaster, and nothing is troweled on until that approval. Vents, light boxes and hose bibs get their own flashing or sealed trim pieces. After move-in the walls ask for little: a look at the control joints after a big storm, a hose rinse when dust builds up and a fresh color wash much later if the tone has drifted. Hairline cracks are cosmetic and close under the next wash.
