Studio City Structural Work, Walls Before Roof
After an attic fire in Studio City, wall tops are judged before new roof framing goes up, and each layer is inspected under the LADBS permit.
Before a single new rafter goes up on a Studio City house hurt by an attic fire, the walls under the roof have to be proven sound. Heat in an attic can scorch the top plates and upper studs along with the rafters, and new roof framing is only as steady as what it rests on. So the wall tops are opened and judged first, and the roof is rebuilt on what passes.
Top plates, then ceiling joists, then rafters
Top plates run along the head of every wall, tying the walls to each other and passing the roof load down into the studs. Where they charred, the engineer decides whether a length can stay with new lumber added beside it or has to be cut out, and temporary posts hold the ceiling up during that work. Ceiling joists return next, fastened to the rafter at each wall so the roof cannot spread the walls apart. Rafters follow at the size and spacing on the drawings, and the frame is checked for straight, true lines before any sheathing is nailed down.
Inspections in the order LADBS sets
Roof sheathing does structural work too. Nailed on the engineer's schedule, it turns the rafters into a stiff plane that hands earthquake and wind forces down to the braced walls, so an inspector checks that nailing under the LADBS permit before any roofing covers it. With the roof dried in, the frame inspection looks at rafters, plates, straps and ties together, along with the rough wiring and plumbing in those walls. Insulation and drywall go up only after that sign off, so no finished ceiling has to be opened later to show the work above it.

Structural Work in Studio City: questions
Climb as high as the fire did. We go into whatever attic space remains, measure the char on rafters, joists and wall tops, and sight along the ridge and the ceiling for lines that sag. The check then moves down through the rooms to the foundation, and each reading is written up with a photo so the repair can be planned from the top.
Rebuilding a roof frame after a fire usually does, since rafter size, the ridge, the ties and the sheathing nailing all decide how the roof stays up and braces the house. The plate and stud repairs that carry it need design as well. A small patch of sheathing over sound rafters may not, and when the line is unclear we ask LADBS.
Yes, and the timing helps. The engineer is already designing the roof to pass sideways force into the walls, so those walls can be strengthened in the same drawing set with plywood panels, hold-downs and new anchor bolts along the sill, while the studs are bare and the permit is open.
