Cerritos Structural Work for Low Roofs That Shed Water

Rain left standing on a flat or low-slope roof is a structural load, and it feeds itself: the joists bend, the dip deepens and more water collects. On a Cerritos rebuild after a fire, every low section is framed with a built-in fall toward its drains or scuppers. The fall can come from sloped joists, tapered sleepers or tapered insulation, and the engineer checks the joists for whatever water could gather.

Framing in the fall

The simplest approach tilts the joists themselves, lifting them along the side away from the drains. If the ceiling under them must stay level, the joists go in flat and tapered sleepers ride on top to create the slope. Where a wall or chimney rises from the high side of the roof, a small framed cricket divides the flow so nothing pools against it. Secondary scuppers are set a little higher than the primary drains, so a blocked drain still lets water out over the edge.

The ponding check and plan review

Engineers treat ponding as its own calculation, confirming the framing is stiff enough that a shallow puddle cannot set off a growing sag. Drain and scupper sizes are written on the plans. City of Cerritos building and safety staff review the roof framing plan and drainage layout together, and the inspector looks at framing, slope and sheathing nailing before the roofer covers anything. Getting the slope into the wood spares the roofing from having to make up for a flat frame.
