Monrovia ADU Construction Under a Hip Roof
Gutters on every eave, buried downspout lines, Class A covering and city plan check, built in inspected steps.
A hip roof sends water off every side of a small Monrovia ADU, which keeps the roofline low along a fence and the profile modest beside a rebuilt main house. Each eave then needs a gutter. We place downspouts at the corners where the ground already falls away, run each into a buried line and end it at a point the city accepts. On a parcel mapped for fire hazard, those gutters carry metal guards so leaves cannot collect at the roof edge.
Framing and flashing the hips
Each hip is a sloped ridge running down to a corner, and the jack rafters that meet it are cut at compound angles, so the framing takes more care than a simple gable. Underlayment laps over every hip, and the covering is a Class A assembly. Where attic venting is needed, a listed ember-resistant vent goes in high on the roof. The soffit around every eave is closed so heat and embers cannot reach the rafter tails, and the gutters hang from hidden brackets screwed into the fascia so wind has little to pry at.
City permits and drainage on the plans
Plans for a Monrovia unit go to the city's building division, which issues the permit. Monrovia is among the cities with mapped fire hazard areas, and a parcel on that map adds the wildfire rules for siding, vents, glazing and gutters to the review. Drainage is drawn too, with each buried line sloped to its outlet and a cleanout wherever it turns. Those lines are laid while the trenches for water and power are open, so one excavation serves both, and their slope is checked before backfill.

ADU Construction in Monrovia: questions
Approval of that order comes from the city, and the drainage is a reason to plan for it. When the unit is built first, its buried downspout lines are laid with spare capacity and capped tees, so the main house gutters can tie into the same outlets later without a new trench across the unit's yard.
For a Monrovia unit under a hip roof, the structural sheet sizes each hip member and its connections, and that sheet comes with the package. The package itself covers a one-story unit of up to 500 square feet, once we have looked at your lot and found it fits. Drainage engineering the city may ask for is quoted separately.
A garage roof may shed water straight off its edges with no gutter at all, which suits a car and not a bedroom window. Conversion adds gutters and buried downspout lines like the ones on a new unit, and on a mapped parcel any new roof covering must be Class A. The slab and walls are checked as well before pricing.
