Some small roofs shed rain with no gutter at all. On a Palms backyard unit, a simple pitched roof with a generous overhang can let water fall straight from the eave onto a bed of gravel over a perforated pipe, which carries it to a dry well or out to the street. With nothing up top to clog, there are no leaves to clear and no downspouts to aim, and the overhang shades the walls from strong sun.
Overhang, drip strip and the soil
The overhang has to project far enough that the drip line lands clear of the wall, and a metal drip edge keeps water from curling back onto the fascia. Water may not be sent onto a neighbor's land, so the drip trench on that side runs toward the back or front of your lot. The inspector checks the trench and pipe before they are covered. If the lot has room, a dry well or a planter can take the water, and the rest goes out to the curb through a solid pipe.
