ADU Construction in Canoga Park, Flashed Where Roofs Meet Walls
Canoga Park ADU construction on a fire rebuild lot: kickout and step flashing where roofs meet walls, a Class A roof, LADBS review and inspected stages.
Where a small porch roof meets the wall of a Canoga Park ADU, rain sliding down the roof edge can run straight into the siding unless something turns it. A kickout flashing, a short bent piece of metal at the bottom of that joint, sends the water into the gutter. On a unit built after a fire, we draw every roof-to-wall joint this way, along with the gutter and downspout each one feeds.
Step flashing, valleys and laps
Water on a roof moves downhill over every lap, so each layer is installed to shed onto the one beneath it, starting at the eave. Where a roof slope runs along a wall, step flashing goes in piece by piece with each course of roofing, and the siding laps over it. Valleys get a full-width metal liner under the covering. On a fire rebuild we use a Class A roof covering throughout, and the underlayment is checked before the covering hides it, while the laps can still be seen.
Doors and windows under the roof edge
Water that leaves the roof still reaches the openings beneath it. A door under a porch roof gets a sill pan that catches any leak at the threshold and drains it outward, and a head flashing that turns water away above the frame. Windows get the same treatment, lapped into the weather barrier in the right order. The landing outside the door is poured with a slight fall away from the unit. All of this is drawn for the LADBS reviewer and checked by the inspector while the weather barrier is still exposed.

ADU Construction in Canoga Park: questions
Yes, within the city's rules on occupying an ADU first. Building it ahead of the house means its roof edges, gutters and porch must be finished early and protected while heavy work goes on nearby. We set the downspouts to empty where the main house footings will not be dug later.
One story and 500 square feet of floor area at most: that is the package's limit, and we confirm your lot before you commit. With a porch on a Canoga Park unit, the wall drawings show the reviewer each roof-to-wall joint and its kickout.
When a garage becomes a dwelling, the joint where its roof meets an attached shed or a lean-to is a frequent leak point, so we open that up along with the slab and framing. If the structure can carry a home, the conversion is priced in writing, and a new detached unit gets its own written figure for comparison.
