Structural Work in Venice for Rooms Lit From Above
Skylights cut into a rebuilt Venice roof need headers, doubled rafters and a curb that keeps water out, framed to an engineer's detail and inspected by LADBS.
Light from above changes how a room is used: a kitchen needs no lamps at noon, a hallway stops being a dark passage. If a fire repair already has a Venice roof open, a skylight can be framed in while the rafters are bare. Cutting rafters moves roof weight onto new headers and doubled members, so the opening follows an engineer's detail, with a curb built to keep water out on a coastal lot.
Framing the opening
Each rafter that is cut gets a header on both ends of the opening, and the rafters on either side are doubled so they can carry what the cut ones no longer do. Hangers rated for the load join the pieces. Where a ceiling hangs under the roof, a light shaft is framed between the two and lined with drywall, and its walls can be splayed to spread the light. On a repair with fire-damaged framing nearby, the engineer checks that the members kept beside the opening are sound enough to take the extra share.
Keeping the opening dry
A skylight leaks at its edges far more often than through the glass. We build a curb on the roof deck, wrap it with membrane that laps under the roofing upslope and over it downslope, and set step flashing along the sides. On a coastal lot, the flashing and fasteners are chosen to resist corrosion from air that carries salt. Condensation is the other water to manage: a well-sealed shaft and a glazed unit with an insulated frame keep indoor moisture from condensing and dripping onto the ceiling.

Structural Work in Venice: questions
Have it opened where the evidence points. After a fire, that means the attic over the burned rooms, the wall cavities behind scorched finishes and the floor framing under any area that took hose water. We measure char depth, take moisture readings and note any rust on hangers, then send a written report the engineer can work from.
Changes to how weight travels usually call for one: cutting rafters for a skylight, removing a member that carries load, putting a heavier covering on the roof, or keeping framing the fire weakened. LADBS looks for stamped details on that kind of work. Swapping a damaged stud or joist for an identical piece may not need one, a point settled before we quote.
Yes, and an open roof adds a chance the walls alone do not give: ties from rafters to the wall top can go in while the framing is exposed. Along the walls, plywood sheathing and hold-downs go onto the bare studs before insulation, and new anchor bolts go in at any stretch of sill within reach. On a coastal lot we specify corrosion-resistant hardware for all of it.
