The plan checker at the City of Hawthorne wants to trace every force in a fire repair from the roof down to the soil. On the drawings that means a clear line: sheathing to blocking, blocking to wall, wall to hold-down, hold-down to anchor in concrete. Where the trail breaks, the set comes back with a correction. We go through the engineer's sheets with that line in mind before any framing starts.

Nails the inspector counts

In the field, the inspector's attention goes to braced walls. The drawings give each one a nail size and an edge spacing, and panel edges must land on solid framing. Nail heads should sit flush, because a gun set too hard punches through the face veneer and the nail loses grip. Where tight spacing is called for, the joint between panels falls on a doubled stud so the wood does not split. Every hold-down is checked against its tag on the plan, size and position both.

Shrinkage, sun and the frame card

Framing lumber keeps drying after it is installed, and as it shrinks, hold-down nuts can loosen, so they are snugged again just before the walls close. Bare studs left open to hard sun and dry wind can twist, so sheathing follows the framing closely. A twisted stud pulls panel edges off their nailing line. Any correction written on the inspection card is fixed and shown to the inspector again before anything covers it. Once the frame is signed, insulation and drywall can follow.
