ADU Construction in Ventura
Ventura ADUs whose roof water is caught in a rain barrel or tank: screened inlets, a first-flush diverter, a safe overflow path and City of Ventura review.
Rain falling on the roof of a Ventura backyard unit does not have to leave the lot right away. A downspout can feed a rain barrel or a larger tank beside the wall, where the water waits for the garden, and only the overflow moves on. On a coastal lot we pick tanks and fittings in plastic or aluminum, and the roof edge metal in aluminum too, because salt in the air eats at plain steel.
Sizing the tank and its overflow
A small roof sheds more water in a storm than one barrel can hold, so the overflow matters as much as the tank. An outlet near the top of the tank leads to a splash pad, a gravel strip or a buried pipe, aimed away from the unit's footings and the ground saved for the future house. Every opening is screened against mosquitoes, and a first-flush diverter sends the dirtiest water off the roof past the tank. A full tank is heavy, so it stands on a level, compacted base. Its water is used for irrigation only.
What the City of Ventura reviews
Ventura's own building staff check the ADU plans along with the drainage around the unit. A barrel filled by a downspout with no pump may need no plumbing permit of its own, while a larger tank with a pump, or one tied into irrigation lines, falls under the plumbing code's rainwater rules and is drawn on the plans. Either way, the overflow route appears on the site plan. A lot inside the state coastal zone may need a coastal approval before the building permit, so the parcel status is confirmed before design begins.

ADU Construction in Ventura: questions
With the City of Ventura's consent to move in ahead of the house, the tank and its overflow go in with the unit, placed where the future house downspouts can reach the same tank or a second one, so the yard drainage is planned once for both roofs.
A Ventura design stays inside the package by keeping to a single level, its floor area at or below the 500 square foot cap. The site plan shows the downspouts, the tank and the overflow path, and a site visit shows whether the unit and its tank fit inside the setbacks. The build is priced on its own.
Garage gutters, where there are any, often empty onto the driveway. A conversion in Ventura can send that roof water to a barrel or a drain, once we confirm the slab, the walls and the rafters can carry a dwelling. You then see what the conversion costs and what a new detached unit costs.
