Cement stucco over metal lath is the wall finish we propose for a backyard unit in Walnut. It holds up under hard sun and dry wind, takes no harm from a sprinkler and does not burn, which matters on a lot that has already lost a house to fire. Behind it goes a double layer of weather barrier, so any water that works through a hairline crack runs down and out at the weep screed.

The wall behind the plaster

Stucco stays sound only when the wall behind it stays dry. We wrap the sheathing in two plies of building paper, lap it shingle fashion over the window flanges and set a weep screed at the base so water can escape. Control joints break large panels into smaller fields to limit cracking as the plaster cures. An integrally colored finish coat spares the wall from regular painting. Where a wall meets a roof, kick-out flashing turns runoff into the gutter and away from the plaster.

Drawings, review and the order of work

The wall section in the permit set shows the stucco, the paper, the sheathing and the insulation in order. Walnut reviews it with the rest of the ADU plans, and an inspector checks the lath and paper before the first coat goes on, since nothing behind the plaster can be seen afterward. Plaster needs curing time between coats, so the schedule leaves room for it before interior work that might jar the walls. When the main house is rebuilt too, both buildings share one stucco detail.
